You've booked your flight to Agadir, secured your spot with Local Surf Maroc in Tamraght, we’ve arranged your airport transfer, but the night before you travel you're standing in front of your suitcase with only a vague notion of what to pack.
It’s normal to feel like you’re forgetting something.
During the summer, the temperatures can range from a temperate 25 degrees Celcius in the morning to soaring above 35 by early afternoon. During Moroccan winters, the temperature can vary between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius from morning to evening.
We know these readings don't make sense when you see pictures of the sunshine and sandy beaches: the western coast of Morocco certainly looks warmer than the weather report provides, especially during the winter.
So what do you pack?
Certainly a daunting question if you've booked a surf camp to Tamraght with Local Surf Maroc for the first time. So we've put together a list of our Top 10 Essential Recommendations on what to pack.
1. Swim Suit
Whether its board shorts or a bikini, this seems like a no-brainer: you're heading to the beach after all.
It's common for some surfers not to wear anything under a wet suit, but we know not everyone is comfortable with that. Make sure that whatever you end up bringing with you it can be easily worn under the wet suit.
Don’t forget to bring at least 2 so you can change into something dry after your surf session is over.
2. Beach Towel
Whether you’re staying at the Surf House, the Surf Villa, or the Surf Riad, we always provide towels during your stay.
Beach towels, however, we do recommend you bring. There's nothing worse than trying to change or dry off back at your accommodation with a damp towel.
3. SunScreen Or Zinc SunBlock
A wetsuit covers most of your body while you’re surfing, but your face, hands, and feet remain exposed for most of the day. And nothing can ruin your surf holiday experience faster than getting burned on these small areas of skin after your first day of surfing.
Sunscreen is great for when you’re spending some time out of the water, even if your sunscreen says “waterproof”. Our favourite reef friendly, high SPF, braod spectrum sunscreens are Bondi Sands and Sun Bum.
If you find that you’re of the extra pale persuasion, burn easily, spending a lot of time in the water, or just want that extra protection, zinc sunblock is the way to go. There are many options with many colours available, but we haven’t found one that we love yet.
If you end up forgetting either of these, there are local surf shops and pharmacies that sell sunscreen and sunblock.
4. Toiletries & Cosmetics
When staying at our surf camp in Morocco, you'll find that we provide all the essentials you need for a comfortable stay. The basics, such as shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste, and deodorant, can be easily purchased in the local shops nearby.
However, if you have specific preferences or are loyal to certain brands, it's best to bring your own cosmetics and hair products. This ensures that you have everything you need to maintain your personal care routine while enjoying the beautiful waves and sunny beaches of Taghazout Bay.
5. Bug Spray
With all the water around, it's a perfect breeding ground for insects. Bring the strongest stuff you can!
6. Flip Flops
Whether your bring a functional or trendy pair, or both, you can't pack too many!
Well, maybe.
Despite surfing during the winter months, this footwear is still essential when spending time on the beach.
7. Hoodies
With temperatures dipping as low as 10 degrees Celcius overnight, hoodies, jumpers, or sweaters will be essential during your stay.
Best to have some long pants, long sleeve shirts, and a light windbreaker as options to layer up as well!
8. Books
With opportunities to relax and unwind either at the stunning beach or in the comfortable accommodations of our Surf House, Villa, or Riad, having a captivating book by your side can truly enhance your stay.
Whether you find solace in the pages of an inspiring novel, seek knowledge through an enlightening non-fiction read, or simply crave an immersive escape in the world of fiction, immersing yourself in a good book can be the perfect complement to the relaxed atmosphere of Local Surf Maroc.
So pack your favorite literary companions in paper or digital copy and allow the power of words to accompany you on your journey while riding waves.
9. Battery Pack, Or Solar Power Charger
You can expect to spend a lot of your day at the beach surfing, however, there will be moments where you'll be using your phone more than you planned to while you're out.
Taking pictures and capturing memories on your phone's camera can drain your battery faster than expected, so we recommend some sort of battery pack that can charge your phone at least once per day.
10. Back Pack
It might seem like a no-brainer of a suggestion to have something to carry your day to day belongings in when you're heading to the beach, but take this as a friendly reminder to pack one if you're packing a suitcase to check in.
Having a reliable beach bag or tote can make all the difference in maximizing your beach experience: It not only provides a convenient and organized way to transport your essentials, but it also adds a touch of style. Whether you're packing sunscreen, towels, snacks, or a good book, a spacious beach bag ensures you have everything you need within reach.
So don't let the hassle of carrying multiple items in your hands or stuffing them into your pocket detract from the joy of soaking up the sun and catching those perfect waves. Invest in a versatile, durable, and waterproof beach bag that will accompany you on countless beach adventures. Trust us, it's a small investment that will pay off in the long run, making beach-going a breeze.
Now that you've checked the list twice and packed everything you might need, you're ready for your surf camp experience at Local Surf Maroc.
